Different Types of Gutters for Different Homes

Posted On: April 29, 2014

Certainly not an exciting piece of your home, gutters are important enough to properly consider your options when deciding on types of gutters. Unless if your home has very long overhangs on the roof, and your yard is graded steeply away from your walls, in every direction, your home needs properly installed gutters. When installed and maintained properly, all types of gutters protect your home and property from:
• Erosion
• Stained siding
• Flooded basements and crawlspaces
• Water damage to doors and windows

Different Materials for Different Types of Gutters

You can get your gutters in a variety of materials, depending on your budget and desired outcome. The types of gutters that you can get include:
• Vinyl gutters
• Wood gutters
• Stainless steel gutters
• Copper gutters
• Aluminum gutters

Most home owners use steel or aluminum gutters, because the price per linear foot is so much less than it is for the other materials. Copper or wood gutters range between 12 and 20 dollars per linear foot, whereas stainless steel or aluminum gutters range between 4 and 8 dollars per linear foot, typically (installed).

Different-Styled Types of Gutters

The two main types of gutters, when it comes to style, are seamless gutters or sectional gutters. Both of these come in a variety of materials, shapes, and sizes.

Sectional Gutters:
• Can be installed as a DIY project, but it’s best to have professional installation
• Come in any cut length, even upwards of 20 ft. long
• Are connected at the joints and seams
• Each joint opens the possibility of leaking or clogging

Seamless Gutters:
• Can be steel, copper, or aluminum gutters
• Only join at corners—no seams
• Made onsite, to custom length, using a portable machine
• Can only be installed professionally
• Less chance of leaking, therefore the most popular

Different Colors for your Gutters

Depending upon the material and types of gutters that you choose, you can choose between many different colors. Sectional steel and aluminum gutters can be made in over 25 different colors, making matching the gutters to your home for a custom designed appearance a simple task.

Most vinyl gutters are found in either white or brown, with a preference toward white, because it lasts better in the sun.

Copper gutters come unpainted, because people paying the extra money for copper gutters, are paying for its natural appearance. There is an option available for people that want the look of copper, without the high cost. There are suppliers that make aluminum gutters specifically to look like copper.
