Roof Repair-Finding the Leak

Posted On: May 13, 2014

When your roof is leaking, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to replace the whole roof. Most of the time, a good roofing company will be able to do a simple roof repair, before any serious damage is done.

Causes of a Leaking Roof

If you are having a single leak, it can be difficult to pinpoint where that is. For the most part, small, single, leaks are caused by one of the following things:
• Cracked or missing shingles or shakes
• Localized damage
• A blistered or cracked spot

The most difficult and time consuming part of this type of roof repair is finding exactly where the leak is coming from.

Shingled Roof Repair

If you are looking for the damage yourself, do the following, carefully:
• Look for missing, damaged, or curled shingles
• At any joint, look for breaks in flashing or caulking
• Look for any gaps in the lines of roof cement

If your roof is steep, or you aren’t comfortable with checking for the damage point yourself, call a roofing company to do an emergency service call. A leaking roof can cause serious water damage to your home.

If you’ve checked for a damage point, and couldn’t find any of the common issues above, then you should call a roofing company.

Professional roofers can check with a practised eye, and it could be something that can’t be seen by the naked eye. Inadequate flashing or shingle deterioration wouldn’t be something that you can see, and fixing them isn’t a job for anyone but a roofing company to do.

Flat Roof Repair

Finding the leaky spot on a flat roof is usually pretty simple. Built up out of layers of tar and roofing felt, a flat roof generally only leaks directly below the damage.

Usually, you will see a lower spot on the roof, and the damage can be found there. Most of the time, the damage to the roofing felt is easy to spot, after you’ve found the low-hanging spot. If there is still a pool of water where the leak is coming from, mop it up with a rag before doing anything else. After the area has dried, you will want to look for cracks or large blistered areas in the felt.

If there doesn’t seem to be a small, single point where your flat roof is leaking, then it could be a bigger problem. In this case, you will definitely need to call in a professional roofing company.
